About Us

Alternative Care operates a day service which is open Mon-Sun 08.00-22.00. Unit 9 is wheelchair accessible, including automatic doors, accessible toilet and wet room with stretcher and hoist. Adult Opportunities can access the ground floor of Clarke Hall using a resource space with a small kitchen and wheelchair accessible surface, a breakout space for group projects/games and a private accessible meeting room. All décor is designed to be low arousal to encourage people to feel safe and supported in ACL services.
Activities available at Adult Opportunities include arts and crafts, cooking, baking, music-making, a sensory/physio space, ball pool and even snug for people to get comfy in. Alternative Care collaborates with Adult Education Services and other partners to create new opportunities for people, including accessible BSL courses and more.
Alternative Care facilitates a weekly drama group called Alternative Entertainment, held in a local church hall, providing activities for health and wellbeing throughout the morning and afternoon with lunch in between. People can participate in games and activities which stimulate motor skills, co-ordination, team building, character development, focus and attention, and more.
Adult Opportunities provides a personalised service which is tailored to fit around what people want. Support workers are supported to be confident to create access to all community-based activities. The workforce has direct support from a company Director who works with the local authority to ensure places in Wakefield are accessible and that people with disabilities are not discriminated against by services. It is possible to recruit support workers based on someone’s specific needs or wishes and anyone using the service may take part in the recruitment of their own staff, for example, we can look for people who love rugby to go to rugby games or find someone who dares to go in an air tunnel!

Supported Living
Alternative Care operates supported living units accommodating service users who live in shared homes. We encourage people to access their local social circle, work towards independence and be healthy adults who can contribute to their community. Where an individual’s needs change or they wish to find new accommodation, Alternative Care supports that individual to reach out to the local authority to achieve positive outcomes. We support people to;
Choose realistic and meaningful activities
Go about their daily lives including; shopping, cleaning, getting out into the community
Remember appointments and/or other important information and correspondence
Ensure good standards of personal health and hygiene and well-being
Have safe transport options
Become members of community groups
Volunteer at the local café or allotment
Find inclusive employment
To vote in any election

My Life Services
Alternative Care defines My Life Services care as ‘homecare that helps people to cope with disability or illness and allows them to maintain independence’. Some individuals need support to live in their own home and the company can provide a number of personal services such as, housework, or help with correspondence to aid their lives. Many people are happy and safe living in their own homes with friends or family and this is something to be maintained during times of illness or difficulty. We can assist people in many ways that could improve their standard of life, even if this means providing someone to interact with as a companion. The range of support could include:
Social Inclusion
Cleaning
Washing
Assisted correspondence with companies
Cooking
Providing for dependants
This service can include delivering a high standard of personal care and safety in peoples’ private homes to help maintain their dignity. We can help service users to stay or get involved in their community and remember relevant dates, events and appointments. Alternative Care wants to supply people with the relevant assistance to lead their lives to their full capacity.
